3/20/1925 | Marquess Curzon of Kedleston died this morning at age 66 from complications following an operation. Long a kingpin of the Conservative party, Lord Curzon spent 40 years in public life, serving as Viceroy and Governor General of India and, at the end of his career, as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Though he came close to becoming prime minister in 1923, his aristocratic past militated against him in an era which nominated leaders from the House of Commons. He twice wed US women and enjoyed fame as an author of books about politics and his own travels. |

12/22/1939 | When Britain declared war against the Germans it appealed for help from all political parties. Congress put up some conditions which in other words were the immediate transfer of power. The Viceroy promised to give due consideration to the suggestions of each party and that the dominion status would be given after the war. 2/4/1974 | Satyendra Nath Bose, a noted mathematician, professor and physicist, passed away at Calcutta. He contributed greatly to statictical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, the therories of X-ray crystallography and thermoluminescence, and unified field theory. Bose instituted ""Planck's Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quana"" in 1924. |
