| 5/6/1910 | Edward VII, King of Great Britain and Emperor of India, died suddenly of pneumonia at Buckingham Palace tonight. He ruled Britain for nine years. Power passed immediately to his son George, the Prince of Wales, who will rule as King George V. The 68-year-old monarch's sudden death threw his country into a state of shock. Edward had apparently caught a cold during a visit the past weekend to the wet grounds of his estate at Sandringham. |

| 12/16/1971 | Bangladesh was formed. President Yahya Khan of Pakistan changed his position dramatically and announced he would accept a ceasefire with India. After his forces in East Pakistan surrendered unconditionally, Yahya Khan vowed to keep fighting in the West against his political enemy. His reversal today undermines his administration, and there are growing indications he will step down as head of the military government. Yahya has already been criticized for his brutal repression of the Bengali separatist movement, which has renamed East Pakistan as Bangladesh. It appears that the separatists may actually benefit from the fighting, because India has managed to defeat most of Yahya's military forces in East Pakistan. |

Beven is reported to have told the great man, ''Eighteen languages, 500 dialects, some 30 religions, a million Gods and Goddesses, 300 million individuals, an infinity of castes and sub castes, and a population (that is) practically illiterate and half of which (are) beggars or thieves... Good luck, sir! Such a nation is ungovernable! It'd take you centuries to get anywhere!''. Gandhiji wrapped his large, white shawl a little more closely around him, and modestly replied, 'India has eternity before her.. and ""All around me is utter darkness"". |
