5/9/1866Gopal Krishna Gokhale, freedom fighter and political leader, was born in Kotluk village of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
9/13/1984Swami Brahmanand died. He established Brahmanand Inter College (1938), Brahmanand Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya (1943) and Brahmanand Mahavidyalaya (1960). He joined the freedom movement and participated in Salt Satyagraha, Non Cooperation Movement and Quit India Movement.

11/21/1970Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman, great Indian physicist, passed away early morning at Bangalore, Karnataka. His work was influential in the growth of science in India. He was the recipient of the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics for the 1928 discovery now called Raman scattering which is a change in frequency observed when light is scattered in a transparent material. When monochromatic or laser light is passed through a transparent gas, liquid, or solid and is observed with the spectroscope, the normal spectral line is associated with it lines of longer and of shorter wavelength and this is called the Raman spectrum. Thus the Raman effect is applied in spectrographic chemical analysis and in the determination of molecular structure.

10/29/1964Priceless and irreplaceable gems, including the famed 'Star of India' of 563.35 carats and 2.5 inches in diameter, were stolen from the American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA, in a daring burglary. An alarm system was discontinued years ago as was the all-night guard in the gem hall, both for reasons of economy. The jewels were uninsured due to high-priced premiums. There were other jewels too that were also robbed during this time.
