Hyderabad, Oct 30 (IANS) Virtual meetings and low-key celebrations marked Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, on Friday.
Processions, blood donation camps, display of holy relics and feeding of the poor were the other highlights of the day in Hyderabad.
As the day coincided with Friday, imams or priests during their sermons exhorted Muslims to follow the teachings of holy Quran and the Prophet for success both in this world and the hereafter.
Thousands of people, carrying green flags and raising slogans in praise of the Prophet, participated in the main procession taken out from historic Mecca Masjid in the old city after Friday prayers.
Though the Sunni United Forum of India had appealed to people to participate in the procession on their vehicles to ensure social distancing, large number of people joined it on foot.
Police had made elaborate security arrangements and diverted vehicular traffic around historic Charminar on the occasion.
Sunni Dwata-e-Islami also organised a Milad procession from Mecca Masjid to Haj House in the morning.
Imam of Mecca Masjid, Moulana Rizwan Qureshi delivered the annual sermon on Milad.
The old city and other Muslim-majority areas in the city were decked up with flags, festoons, banners, welcome arches and lighting. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent heavy rains and floods cast their shadow on the celebrations this year.
The decoration and lighting were not even 50 per cent of what it used to be every year.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and All India Majlis Tameer-e-Millat organised their annual public meetings in a virtual mode.
Like every year, AIMIM organised its public meeting on the night before Milad while Tameer-e-Millat held the meet during the day.
Several eminent religious scholars addressed the meetings online. They called upon Muslims to strictly adhere to the Islamic teachings.
Various religious organisations held online meetings to highlight the message of the Prophet and organised "Mahfil-e-Milad" or special gatherings in praise of the Prophet to mark the occasion. The holy relics were on display at few places in the city.
Various organisations and individuals organised philanthropic activities on the occasion.
FOCUSS, the Tanzeem-e-Irshadul Muslimeen and the Chishti Foundation organised blood donations camps at different places.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao greeted Muslims on Milad.
"The most venerable Prophet's mission is fulfilled when we serve our fellowmen with faith, trust, care, kindness and compassion. On this occasion, let us all resolve to promote unity, harmony, peace, universal brotherhood and prosperity in the society," the Governor said in her message.
"The teachings of compassion, tolerance, unity, harmony and universal brotherhood may continue to inspire us all in working for the well-being of all. May there be peace and prosperity all around," she added.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his greetings on Milad.
He hoped that the Muslim brethren will follow the teachings of the Prophet and live happily, harmoniously and celebrate Milad un-Nabi with religious zeal and fervour following Covid-19 protocols.
