Kolkata, Feb 17 (IANS) The under-construction bridge on Farakka barrage that collapsed in Baishnabnagar of West Bengal's Malda district, could have been the victim of a faulty plan, a site engineer alleged on Monday.

Three persons including an engineer were killed and three others were injured when the bridge crashed in Baishnabnagar on Sunday night, officials said. The mishap occurred when the girder being installed between pillar number one and two came down.

However, a site engineer on Monday claimed that the plan given by the construction company had flaw.

"We did point it out to them. We discussed about two-three areas, but they didn't give anything in writing. We said you give us in black and white, we will change it as per our understanding. But they never gave us in writing.," said the engineer.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress and the BJP engaged in a political slugfest..

"There was a nexus around the bridge. Game of cut money, mastan raj was there. There should be a comprehensive probe and action taken against the guilty," said former state minister and Trinamool Congress leader Krishnendu Narayan Chaudhuri.

State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh described the accident as "very unfortunate" and "horrifying" and sought a probe to decide whether this present constructors can carry out the project.

"It must found out what went wrong - the plan, or If there were some lapses, the company should e asked to pay the damages. The families of the dead should be compensated,' she said.

Responding to the Trinamool leader's claim that there was corruption, Ghosh hit back: "Only those who themselves take cut money, find such things everywhere."
