Chenchitha Parinayam

by Academy of Kuchipudi Dance in Suwanee

Event Type: Community Event

Admission : $100, $50, $25

Chenchitha Parinayam is a Kuchipudi dance drama based on the Puranic story of
Prahlada, the child devotee of Lord Vishnu. Moved by Prahlada's steadfast devo
tion, Vishnu demonstrates his own unwavering loyalty to Prahlada by taking on
the half man, half lion form of Narasimha. The story symbolizes the fundamental
tenet of the Puranas and other Hindu texts that a devotee's trust in the divine will
be reciprocated.
Some of South India's most ancient and ornate temples are dedicated to Lord
Narasimha, including the Sobhanachala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Agi
ripalli, Andhra Pradesh. This temple is located only a few miles from Kuchipudi, the
epomynous village in which the dance form originated. In addition to the temple,
Agiripalli is home to one of the oldest residential schools for studying the Vedas of
India, Sri Sobhanachala Lakshmi Narasimha Veda Sastra Patasala.
To commemorate the Academy of Kuchipudi Dance's 25th anniversary, this perfor
mance is dedicated to our Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam garu and Sobhanachala
Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swami. The proceeds will be directed to ensure the sus
tainability of the Veda Patasala and the art form.
