10/28/1984	Federal agents early this morning caught Guru Shree Rajneesh trying to flee the country. Rajneesh was charged with violating immigration laws and arranging phoney marriages for his cult members. The religious leader was nabbed at Charlotte, North Carolina airport when his jet, bound for Bermuda, touched down for re-fueling. The Bhagwan ran a commune of about 1,500 people in Oregon. Thousands more cult members live in Rajneesh's native land India and other countries. He knew the federal government had no faith in him after his chief adviser, a woman named Ma Anand Sheela, was arrested in West Germany for several minor offenses. Rajneesh appeared in court on this date clad in a lavender robe.
2/1/1992	Mohan Choty, comedy film actor, passed away.
5/19/1904	Jamshedji Nasarvanji Tata, famous industrialist and father of modern technology, passed away at Nauheim, Hesse-Nassau, France. He commenced cotton mills in Bombay and Nagpur and founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is one of the largest integrated steel mills in the world.
12/16/1971	Bangladesh was formed. President Yahya Khan of Pakistan changed his position dramatically and announced he would accept a ceasefire with India. After his forces in East Pakistan surrendered unconditionally, Yahya Khan vowed to keep fighting in the West against his political enemy. His reversal today undermines his administration, and there are growing indications he will step down as head of the military government. Yahya has already been criticized for his brutal repression of the Bengali separatist movement, which has renamed East Pakistan as Bangladesh. It appears that the separatists may actually benefit from the fighting, because India has managed to defeat most of Yahya's military forces in East Pakistan.

2/7/1997	Bal Thackeray, Shiv Sena supremo, found guilty of contempt of court and sentenced to simple imprisonment of one week and a fine of Rs. 2000 by Nagpur bench of Mumbai HC for his statement that ''a judge had demanded a bribe of Rs. 35 lakhs for favouring a litigant''.
9/25/1947	Kashmir accedes to Indian Union.
7/14/1636	Aurangzeb was appointed as Shahjahan by Viceroy of Deccan.
10/2/1997	At least 50 Pakistan soldiers were killed and several injured in a retaliatory firing by Indian troops in Nowgam, Uri and Kupwara sectors. Firing had been intermittent along LoC.
10/21/1954	Government of India and France sign an agreement for the de-facto transfer of the French settlement of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe to the Indian Union. The merger took place on November 1.
