7/2/1938Chandra K. N. Patel was born at Baramati near Pune. In 1974, he was the youngest scientist to be elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. Besides, he is the recipient of the Ballantine Medal, The Worykin Award and The lamme Medal. Chandra K. N. Patel is the Executive Director of one of the divisions of the AT&T Bell Laboratories, USA.
5/24/1991The body of Rajiv Gandhi, India's assassinated former premier and son of the late Indira Gandhi, was cremated in New Delhi today. He was killed by a suicide bomber in the southern state of Tamil Nadu three days ago. Police suspect that Tamil rebels, fighting for independence in Sri Lanka, carried out the murder. Gandhi's death signaled the end of the Nehru dynasty's rule over India. His two children were too young to assume the leadership of this turbulent nation. There was pressure for Sonia Gandhi to succeed her husband, but she was Italian-born and refused.
11/29/1996The Indian Journal of Medical Research brought out special issues, as part of the 85th year celebrations of ICMR, on Nutrition Research (November 1995) and Diarrhoeal Diseases (July, 1996). The ICMR Bulletin also brought out special issues on such topics as Nutrition, Tuberculosis, AIDS, Tribal Health, etc. so as to coincide with the theme selected for a particular month as part of the celebrations. As part of the global theme initiative coordinated by JAMA, USA, the January 1996 issue of the ICMR was devoted to 'Emerging and Re-emerging Infections'.
