9/26/1956Laxmanrao Kirloskar, great social reformer, industrialist, patriot and founder of the Kirloskar Industries, passed away at the age of 88.
1/3/1985Azharuddin scores 110 in first Test innings.
7/10/1927Ganga Ram, great social reformer and founder of Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, died in England while functioning as an active member of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. He was against dowry and child marriages and advocated widow re-marriage and also established institutions for vocational education and education for adults.
10/24/1984First Metro Train (Underground Train) in India started between Esplanade and Bhowanipore in Calcutta city.
6/7/1984Indian Army troops, sent to Punjab to quell Sikh violence, stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest of Sikh shrines. More than 400 persons were reported killed in the assault at the shrine, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
